Common beliefs of batterers...

  1. Anger causes violence
  2. Women are manipulative
  3. Women think of men as paychecks
  4. Women have economic power because they are given pay checks.
  5. If men do not control women, then women will control men.
  6. Smashing things is not abusive, its venting.
  7. Sometimes there is no alternative to violence.
  8. Women are just as violent as men.
  9. Women want to be dominated.
  10. Somebody has to be in charge.
  11. Jealousy is natural in men.
  12. Violence is often a break down of communication.
  13. A man has a right to choose his partner's friends.
  14. A man cannot change if a woman will not.
  

   Do you or someone you know...

  1. Frighten your partner through looks or actions, destroy property, abuse pets, or display weapons?
  2. Continually put your partner down, play name calling games, or humiliate your partner?
  3. Control what your partner does, whom they see and talk to, and where they go?
  4. Make light of the abuse, blaming someone else for the abusive behavior, or insist that it did not happen at all?
  5. Threaten to take the children away or use the children to relay messages?
  6. Prevent your partner from getting or keeping a job?
